Mental Health Statistics

Philippines Mental Health Burden

Mental health issues are among the world’s silent killers, often overlooked but profoundly affecting individuals and societies. These struggles, though invisible, can result in severe consequences such as a diminished quality of life, chronic illness, and even loss of life. Prioritizing mental health is essential to enhancing well-being and preventing these hidden challenges from becoming fatal.

Prevalence of Mental Health Disorders

  • In the Philippines, an estimated 3.3 million Filipinos suffer from mental health disorders, according to the Department of Health (DOH). This includes individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.
  • Depression is one of the leading mental health conditions in the Philippines, affecting around 6 million Filipinos, according to the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA).

Suicide Rates

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the suicide rate in the Philippines is approximately 3.2 per 100,000 people. While this may seem low compared to global rates, suicide remains a significant public health concern.
  • The age group most affected by suicide in the Philippines is 15 to 29 years old, making it the second leading cause of death for young people.

Youth Mental Health

  • About 17% of Filipino students between the ages of 13 and 17 have attempted suicide at least once, according to the Global School-Based Student Health Survey conducted in the country.
  • A study by the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) revealed that calls to their crisis hotlines, especially from young individuals, surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, indicating increased mental health struggles among the youth.

Adult Mental Health

Approximately 41% of Filipinos, particularly from consumer groups identified as “Prosumers,” have reported experiencing mental health challenges. The issue is even more pronounced among Filipino Gen-Zs, with 73% indicating they struggle with mental health issues. Stigma remains a major barrier to accessing mental health services, as many individuals feel pressured to mask their emotions, fearing social judgment or dismissal of their mental health struggles.

Access to Mental Health Services

  • The Philippines has fewer than 1 psychiatrist for every 100,000 people, far below the WHO’s recommended ratio of 10 psychiatrists per 100,000 individuals.
  • Mental health services are largely concentrated in urban centers, leaving many rural areas underserved. The Philippine Mental Health Law (Republic Act No. 11036), passed in 2018, aims to improve access to mental health care across the country, but significant gaps remain in the availability of services.
